Here are some examples of the interview process I use during an interview (doesn’t matter if the interview is conducted in person or virtual) to determine technical ability, problem solving skills, thought organization, soft skills, and other traits valuable to the company.
There also needs to be a determination if this person will work well with the existing team and some of the interview questions asked can assist with that analysis.

Enjoy! If you have any feedback, contact information is in the footer.

Example Basic Interview Questions

  • What is the difference between Software Testing and Software Quality Assurance?
  • Ask several “How would you handle this situation?” questions designed to evaluate the candidate’s ability to diagnose and respond to situations.
  • What part do you like the most about QA work?
  • What part do you like the least about QA work?

Problem Solving Questions Done Independently

During the interview process a candidate is asked to complete several problem solving questions independently without expectations of dialoge back and forth.

This question about test case writing is an example of that process.

Experience level of the candidate is a factor in determining the quality of the test cases written.

Problem Solving Questions Done Interactively

After working independently, the candidate is asked several questions looking to generate back and forth discussion as well as problem solving in real time. These questions are more difficult and if the position is junior level they may be guided after a period of silence.

This question about testing a vending machine is an example of that process.

Interview Wrap-up

The last part of the interview is always an opportunity for the candidate to ask questions to me or the interview team. It's important to give them an open opportunity to ask anything they want.

It's also an opporunity to judge how interested they are in the position. Candidates that are more engaged will have actually reviewed the job position description closely and learned about the company they are interviewing with.
This is an opporunity to weed out candidates who are just applying to lots of jobs and don't really have an interest or passion about the specific job opening or software quality assurance.
